In his heart Phillip Allen was a teacher. He believed teaching was a calling rather than a profession and his greatest gift was the significant influence he left on the lives of so many of his former students. He was the first in his family to attend college and began his teaching and coaching career in 1963 at Dubberly High School in Louisiana, where he led boys to a state basketball championship at the age of 25. He remained close to his first students throughout his life. He taught and coached at North Caddo High School before coming to the Dallas independent School District in 1973 as a middle school math teacher. There, he spent 34 years as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and administrator. During his last years in DISD, he directed the alternative school program for students who had been excluded from schools for disciplinary issues. He had a gift and a passion for working with hard to reach students, and developed many successful programs and supports to help high-risk students.
After retiring from the Dallas schools in 2007, he served as an adjunct education professor at the University of Texas at Dallas in the Teacher Development Center. He loved teaching aspiring teachers and developed many wonderful and enduring relationships with students and faculty at UTD.
Phillip's friends, family, former students and colleagues have come together to raise funds to establish an endowed scholarship in his memory and continue his legacy at UT Dallas. The Phillip Allen Teacher Development Scholarship will support UT Dallas students during their student teaching experience. Reaching our goal of at least $25,000* will ensure that students receive financial support each year, in perpetuity. This scholarship will help ease the financial burden of tuition for students with the greatest financial need during their unpaid student teaching semester.
Any amount you wish to give in support of this project is appreciated. All gifts are considered charitable contributions to The University of Texas at Dallas and tax-deductible as allowed by law. Click "GIVE NOW" to make a secure, online credit card donation.
The Teacher Development Center in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies provides teacher certification programs for individuals interested in becoming K-12 teachers and school administrators. The center offers coursework, extensive in-classroom experiences and mentoring by master teachers. Each year, about 200 student teachers complete preparations through the center. Preparing the next generation of teachers is one of the most important jobs a university can do, and UT Dallas-trained graduates are in great demand.
