The Media Archeology Lab (MAL) is a cultural research space in the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology where faculty, staff, and students collaborate on projects to restore and reinvigorate vintage media.
The educational objective of the lab is to stimulate interest in a growing area of research about the cultural impact of media devices, technologies and applications of the past 100 years. Historical knowledges inspires new insights!
Donations to the lab support undergraduate student research assistants in developing projects, acquiring research materials and participating in workshops and events. Donations also support our ability to provide demos of the lab’s vintage computers during the Southwest Vintage Computer Festival.
Students come from different schools at UT Dallas. Their topics of interests are expansive: animation, games, computer science, software engineering, history of film, photography, audio and sound, storytelling and design.
The lab houses an archive of vintage media devices and content. Significant collections include working Apple vintage computers, mini and portable televisions, laser disk film collection, vintage brownie cameras, educational software, movie projectors, and print materials
A contribution to the lab will enable a passionate group of student researchers at UT Dallas to contribute to the history of media and explore the creative possibilities of not-yet-dead media!
Thank you!
