Border Trip for Choir Students

UT Dallas Choir Students

Reconnecting Through Art – Riunidos en Arte

We invite you to support the Choir of The University of Texas at Dallas for a joint performance - Riunidos en Arte - with the special musical program called Esperanza Azteca from Mexico. Your donation is vital to help cover the cost of transportation for our choir students to participate. The total transportation cost is $5,000, and thanks to our supporters thus far, we are almost there! The performance will take place in El Paso, Texas over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (January 17-20, 2020) and our choir will sing and offer support to our brothers and sisters living closest to the U.S./Mexican border.

The purpose of our boarder trip is for our students to offer friendship, peace, respite, and dignity to those who may be suffering. Be it asylum seekers, new immigrants, or residents reeling from El Paso’s recent mass shooting, our singers wish to offer encouragement through fellowship, assistance, and song.

While planning this humanitarian effort, the UT Dallas Choir Program received and accepted an invitation to cross the border into Mexico for a very special musical collaboration with Esperanza Azteca, a program that brings music education to Mexico’s underprivileged youth. This event will be on Saturday, January 18, 2020, in Ciudad Juárez at El Punto, an outdoor venue constructed for Pope Francis’ 2016 visit. This concert will be free and open to the public. On Sunday, January 19, 2020, UT Dallas students will again collaborate with Experanza Azteca to perform in El Paso’s historic Coliseum located in the heart of Downtown El Paso. This event is in cooperation with and in support of The Opportunity Center for the Homeless, a local nonprofit serving El Paso’s unsheltered.
