The UT Dallas National Black Law Student Association was designed to increase the number of culturally accountable and responsible black minority students across the UTD pre-law demographic and to help them excel professionally and academically to positively impact the community. UTD NBLSA promotes three major values including but not limited to excellence, service and growth. It is rooted in the motivation to help bridge the gap of black students who aspire to go into the legal field, by providing them essential resources including a mentorship program between legal professionals and students, LSAT prep and more. UTD NBLSA has been able to merge our visions, missions and values to create the LegalLoom Mentorship Program.
The LegalLoom Mentorship Program is a transformative initiative curated to empower minority black pre-law students at UTD by connecting them with experienced black attorneys and other legal professionals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 2023, only 5% of attorneys were black. The legal field is a heavily connection-based profession and many minority black students do not usually have established connections with people in the legal field. Because of this, many students are deterred from entering the legal field as they do not have anyone to guide them through and jumpstart their aspirations. The LegalLoom Program caters towards ensuring that minority black students have a foundation and stepping stool in the legal field, helping build their network and connections.
Our fundraising goal of $1,500 is crucial to executing the program’s vision. With these funds, we plan to organize close-knit mentorship socials between students and their legal professional mentors, provide essential resources and facilitate networking opportunities for students and attorneys ensuring that students are engaging with their mentors as often as possible. The money will be allocated for venue expenses, ensuring sufficient space for attendees, catering, professional outfits for student participants (if not already owned) and appreciation gifts for the professional mentors.
If we surpass our initial goal, the UTD NBLSA LegalLoom program will be involved in attending national conferences and attending HBCU law school visits which will help broaden students’' exposure to other legal professionals and grow their network which will help them serve their community properly. We aspire to establish scholarships and expand the program’'s reach, while also assisting with LSAT prep resources, as it can be a burden for many minority students.
The impact of LegalLoom extends beyond individuals. It aims to influence UT Dallas, the legal community and the broader society by fostering diversity and inclusion. We strive to ensure that people in the black pre-law community are utilizing as many resources as possible while they are still in college. UTD NBLSA has a dedicated team of 7 individuals who aid in public relations, service, finance, etc. and work to make this program a success.
LegalLoom Mentorship is dedicated to bridging the mentorship gap, building a supportive community and fostering successful legal careers for black students . Your support will make a lasting impact on our community, contributing to diversity and excellence within the legal profession. Join us in creating a difference!
