Thank you to everyone who helped us smash our goal on the very first day of our drive! We want to keep the momentum going and are now trying to reach our new stretch goal of $10,000 by Aug. 31. By helping us reach our new goal, you are helping to make sure fresh produce and perishables can be stocked and that the cupboard can meet the demand for our projected busiest semester ever.
As UT Dallas prepares to welcome students back to campus, the Comet Cupboard needs your support for its biggest year yet.
The Comet Cupboard just celebrated its 10th anniversary, serving over 12,000 unique Comets and becoming an integral source of student support at UT Dallas. As the cupboard gets ready for the 2024-25 school year, there are many ways to help:
Help support more Comets
Last spring, the cupboard moved into their new 1,200 square foot space in the McDermott Library. The new space (MC 1.608) has brought new capabilities and has allowed the cupboard to double its average weekly visitors to around 600 student visits. Although the cupboard has more space, it’s become harder than ever to keep the shelves stocked.
Stock the shelves with fresh produce
The most popular new capability is the introduction of fresh produce. Demand is so high that the cupboard has started new partnerships with the North Texas Food Bank and UT Dallas Dining to meet demand. Fun fact: a donation of $20 will purchase a crate of fresh produce. Each crate will serve around 20 students in need.
To-go bags fill critical gaps
The Comet Cupboard relies on student and staff volunteers. The cupboard is often closed between academic sessions and at the start of semesters as it recruits and trains volunteers. The cupboard provides Food Bags that are available to pick up 24-7 at the Police Department to help students in need even when the cupboard cannot be open. Fun fact: a $5 donation will purchase one complete to-go bag to serve one student.
Drop off most-needed items
Cereals, proteins and cooking basics (oil, salt, flour and sugar) fly off the cupboard’s shelves faster than they can stock them. Drop off the any of the most-requested items at one of 16 locations across campus.
Support community
With the larger space and higher demand, the cupboard needs the support of even more student and staff volunteers. The cupboard has provided over 16,500 volunteer hours and distributed over 500,000 items to date. Volunteer shifts can have up to six volunteers working, and you too can become a volunteer at the Comet Cupboard! Just fill out this interest form to get started.
Make your gift reccur monthly
The Comet Cupboard needs regular, on-going support to help keep it's shelves stocked. By making a recurring gift, the Comet Cupboard can boost the Comet Cupboard’s ability to plan and execute long-term programs to keep #UTDHungerFree. You can make your recurring gift here.
