The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at UT Dallas (AIAA UTD) is an interdisciplinary organization of over 250 active members focusing on all things aerospace. Our mission is to bring aerospace opportunities to UT Dallas students, connect students with aerospace-related career opportunities and contributing to UTD’s growing reputation on both the national and international stage!
AIAA UT Dallas represents UTD in three international competitions and launches UTD students into aerospace careers.
To accomplish our ambitious goals, we provide our members the opportunity to take part in complex and dynamic engineering projects, developing both their technical and soft skills in the process. From rockets and rovers to aircraft and wind turbines, we allow our members to throw themselves into all kinds of aerospace-related projects. AIAA UTD also manages no fewer than three international competition teams; we currently compete in the Spaceport America Cup (rocketry), AIAA Design/Build/Fly (aviation) and NASA Lunabotics (planetary robotics) competitions. Through these events, our members get to network with some of the best engineers in the industry, while also boosting the reputation of UT Dallas on the big stage.
Last year, we placed No. 1 in the world among colleges without an aerospace program at the Design/Build/Fly competition, so we’re hardly surprised that our engineers have landed positions at Airbus, Sierra Space, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, to name just a few!
Although it’s clear that we have the people, passion and skills to create internationally competitive designs for our competition teams, we’ve often found that we face challenges when we reach the manufacturing stage for our vehicles. That’s why this year, we’re crowdfunding for a high-quality laser cutter and a new 3D-printer to increase the production quality of our designs. Access to these machines is of paramount importance to our project. In the past, we’ve only had access to poor quality manufacturing tools, which has hurt the aerodynamic performance of our aircraft and rockets. Your contribution to our organization will push us toward bringing our ever-more-complex designs to life through these new machines, continuing the ever-upwards trajectory of our students and our school!
