Help send MAPS students to 2025 Annual Medical Education Conference

Our project aims to raise funds to send members of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) to the 2025 Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) hosted by the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). This is a vital opportunity for our members to network with medical professionals, participate in workshops and gain exposure to critical discussions on healthcare disparities, leadership and medical education. AMEC 2025 is especially important for students from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine, as it fosters professional growth and personal development within an inclusive environment. By attending, our members can bring back invaluable insights to share with our campus community, enhancing the quality and diversity of pre-medical education at UT Dallas.

Fundraising Goal and Importance

Our goal is to raise $2,000, which is essential for covering the costs associated with sending our members to the conference. Achieving this goal will allow us to provide our members with the opportunity to attend a world-class medical education conference without financial barriers. When we reach our goal, MAPS will be able to sponsor several students, allowing them to benefit from the knowledge, mentorship and networking opportunities at AMEC. These experiences will help inspire and equip our members to pursue successful careers in medicine, especially as they prepare for medical school applications and future leadership roles.

Budget Breakdown

Our fundraising goal is $2,000, and this is how the funds will be allocated:

  • Transportation: $600 (round-trip flights for 3-4 members).
  • Conference Registration: $800 (conference tickets and registration fees for three-four members).
  • Accommodation: $400 (lodging for two-three nights).
  • Food & Meals: $200 (meal stipends for attendees during the conference).

This budget covers the essentials to ensure that our members can fully participate in the conference without the burden of out-of-pocket costs.

Stretch Goals

If we surpass our $2,000 goal, additional funds will be used to expand the impact of this initiative. Specifically, we can sponsor more members to attend AMEC, increasing our group’s participation from three-four members to potentially six-eight. Additionally, we can provide further financial support for transportation, allowing attendees from our MAPS chapter to carpool to the airport or travel to pre-conference networking events. Stretch funds could also allow us to bring more educational resources back to UT Dallas, such as conference materials, books or organizing a post-conference event where attendees share what they’ve learned with the broader student community. Extra funding will strengthen our chapter’s ability to support professional development and leadership within minority students pursuing careers in medicine.

Impact

Attending AMEC 2025 will have a profound impact on our MAPS members, the UT Dallas campus and the wider community. Our members will return with new skills, knowledge and motivation to continue their journey towards medical school and leadership in healthcare. They will also be equipped to mentor other underrepresented students, creating a positive ripple effect within our organization and the UT Dallas pre-med community. Additionally, the connections made at the conference will allow us to build partnerships with other chapters and medical professionals, fostering collaborations that will benefit MAPS for years to come.

By empowering underrepresented students in medicine, this initiative aligns with MAPS’ mission of supporting diversity in healthcare and addressing health disparities. The knowledge our members gain from AMEC will help us advocate for better healthcare outcomes within underserved communities and inspire others to pursue careers in medicine.

Who We Are

MAPS is a student-led organization at UT Dallas that focuses on supporting underrepresented students who aspire to pursue careers in medicine and healthcare. Our mission is to provide academic, professional and mentorship opportunities to minority pre-medical students. We achieve this through events like clinical case studies, community outreach, professional workshops and collaborations with regional chapters of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). Our members are driven, dedicated individuals who aim to make a difference in the field of medicine by addressing health disparities and promoting diversity in healthcare. We provide valuable programs and opportunities to prepare students for medical school and leadership roles in the future. We are proud of our active involvement in the community and the unique programs we offer, including clinical case studies on dermatology, mentorship pairings with medical professionals and social events that strengthen our members’ network and support system. Our chapter has consistently demonstrated a commitment to uplifting our members and promoting academic and personal excellence.
