The UTDesign EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program at The University of Texas at Dallas provides students with a unique opportunity to make an impact while gaining invaluable real-world experience. EPICS connects multidisciplinary teams of students with non-profit organizations, allowing them to apply their engineering and computer science skills to solve critical challenges. This program is not just about providing services to non-profits-it’s about empowering students to develop practical skills, build confidence and prepare for their professional careers through hands-on, impactful projects.
Since its inception in 2016, more than 1,000 students have worked on over 70 projects, tackling everything from healthcare improvements to environmental initiatives. These experiences shape UT Dallas students into not just engineers or computer scientists, but innovators and leaders with a strong sense of social responsibility. The program continues to grow rapidly, with record-breaking course enrollments each semester. Both alumni and junior mentors play a key role in the program’s success. Alumni, many of whom return after graduation, share their experience and insights, while current students serve as junior mentors, guiding their peers. Together, they foster a community of service that extends far beyond the UT Dallas campus, making a lasting impact both in Texas and internationally.
The EPICS program has recently secured a dedicated space for software teams within the program: the EPICS Software Hub. While the EPICS Studio has long supported hardware projects, the growing demand for software-based projects has highlighted the need for a similar environment for these teams. The EPICS Software Hub is designed to meet this demand by offering a space where software teams can work together more effectively, share ideas and present their work.
This hub is essential for several reasons:
Our goal is to raise $2,500 to furnish the new EPICS Software Hub. Specifically, these funds will be used to purchase:
These monitors will allow software teams to share and collaborate on code more easily, troubleshoot issues and refine solutions in real time
Beyond Our Goals: If we exceed our fundraising goal, additional funds will be used to further enhance the space with tools and furnishings that foster a more innovative environment. This includes more seating, upgraded technology and collaborative tools to promote teamwork and creativity. We also plan to invest in modular tables, providing our software student teams with a more flexible and comfortable workspace to support their ongoing projects and growth.
By supporting the EPICS Software Hub, you are directly contributing to the success of students working on meaningful projects for non-profit organizations across North Texas and beyond.
These students are solving real-world problems through innovative software solutions and your donation will provide them with the environment and resources they need to succeed. The impact of your support will extend far beyond the students themselves; it will benefit the community organizations they serve and the broader UT Dallas community.
EPICS is a unique program that empowers students to make a real difference while gaining valuable hands-on experience. By contributing to the EPICS Software Hub, you are investing in the future of UT Dallas students, helping them develop critical technical and leadership skills. This program allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, preparing them for professional careers and instilling a strong sense of social responsibility. Your support directly impacts the students, giving them the tools and resources to create innovative solutions, while building confidence, problem-solving abilities and a commitment to service
Thank you for helping us create a space where innovation, collaboration and service come together!
