Black Students in Medicine (BSM) is a student organization committed to championing the journey of Black students in medicine by fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment that cultivates academic excellence, professional growth and holistic well-being. Established in fall 2024, BSM is a new but rapidly growing organization dedicated to increasing representation in the medical field and equipping our members with the resources necessary to succeed.
Our vision is to create a future where Black individuals are not only represented, but celebrated and empowered in every facet of the medical profession. To achieve this, we uphold our four key pillars: Unity, Academic Excellence, Community Service and Mentorship. Through these pillars, we aim to provide resources to our members nationwide, ensuring they receive the support and opportunities needed to thrive.
We are launching this fundraising campaign to raise funds for essential skill-building workshops and conferences. Our goal is to provide financial support for our members to attend major medical conferences such as American Medical Student Association Conference in 2026 (AMSA) and the UT Health Professions Conference. These conferences offer networking opportunities, hands-on skill training, and exposure to leading professionals in the medical field. Additionally, we plan to organize a cadaver lab experience at the University of North Texas Health Science Center to give our members critical anatomical training. These experiences are vital because in the U.S., Black physicians make up only 5.7% of the medical profession. By investing in our members’ development, we are actively working to bridge this gap and ensure our students enter their respective fields with the skills and confidence needed to excel.
When we reach our fundraising goal of $2,000, we will begin planning and coordinating transportation and other necessary expenses for the cadaver lab trip. This experience will provide hands-on exposure to human anatomy, providing the education and training necessary for aspiring physicians. If our goal is exceeded, additional funds will be allocated to our AMSA travel fund, allowing even more members to attend the conference.
Since our establishment, BSM has already made a significant impact in the UT Dallas community. We have hosted a medical mixer featuring the UTSW-Frisco Trauma Medical Director and partnered with Stop the Bleed, Feed My Starving Children and The American Heart Association. We have also offered “15 Days of Internships” opportunities for our members. These initiatives exemplify our dedication to fostering the next generation of Black medical professionals and empowering them with the knowledge and experiences needed to succeed.
Supporting BSM means investing in the future of Black medical professionals and contributing to a more diverse and inclusive healthcare landscape. Your donation will directly impact our members by providing them with the tools, experiences and connections necessary to achieve their medical aspirations. Together, we can shape a future where Black excellence in medicine is also recognized, respected and embraced.
