Help Hearts for the Homeless meet their goal!

Hearts for the Homeless (H4H) is a student-led service organization dedicated to promoting and improving the health outcomes of individuals experiencing homelessness. Based in Dallas, our chapter is part of a larger international network that was originally founded in Florida. While our primary focus is on hands-on patient care, we welcome students of all majors who share a passion for community service and compassion for underserved populations. Our mission is simple yet powerful — to bring accessible healthcare resources and education to those who need it most.

In Dallas, our members volunteer at homeless outreach events where we provide free blood pressure screenings and mental health checks. These simple but vital services help identify potential health concerns and connect individuals to the care they deserve. We also distribute information about nearby free or low-cost medical clinics to ensure that participants can seek continued treatment if necessary. By meeting people where they are, we aim to bridge the gap between vulnerable populations and the health care system, empowering individuals to take charge of their well-being.

Beyond providing screenings and referrals, our organization recognizes the importance of addressing basic human needs as part of holistic health care. To further this mission, we created an initiative known as Care Packages for the Homeless. Each care package is thoughtfully assembled by our members and contains essential items such as gloves, masks, pain relievers, feminine hygiene products and other necessities that many homeless individuals struggle to access or afford. These care packages serve multiple purposes: they offer immediate relief, demonstrate compassion and serve as a gateway for meaningful engagement.

When we distribute care packages at outreach events, they often serve as an invitation for conversation. As individuals approach our booth, we are able to talk with them about heart health, the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring and ways to maintain healthier lifestyles despite difficult circumstances. This personal connection not only allows us to provide education but also builds trust between our volunteers and the community we serve.

Currently, our care package initiative relies heavily on member donations. Each package costs approximately $5 to assemble, yet its impact can be profound — offering comfort, dignity and care to someone in need. Through funding opportunities like the Impact UTD Project, we hope to expand our efforts and create more care packages to reach an even larger portion of the homeless population in Dallas. Every additional donation directly translates into more lives touched and more opportunities to promote health and compassion in our community.
At Hearts for the Homeless, we believe that improving heart health goes beyond just physical wellness — it’s about strengthening the hearts of individuals and communities alike. Through education and hands-on service we are able to make a lasting impact.
