Help Our Animators Take Flight: From Texas to Brazil

From more than 120 international submissions, two projects from the experimenta.l. animation lab at the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at The University of Texas at Dallas were selected for the Student Project Incubator (IPE – Incubadora de Projetos Estudantis) at the Lanterna Mágica International Animation Festival in Goiânia, Brazil. Only 12 projects worldwide were chosen, and the two UT Dallas projects are the only ones representing the United States.

The selected projects are from the students Chloe Serimontrikul and Colton Dillard, both from the Bass School. Their projects, Patty and Pushpin and Quicksand, were selected for the international project incubator, where students participate in intensive workshops with industry professionals focusing on story development and pre-production. In addition, their completed films created in the experimena.l. lab, Never Steal from Baba Yaga and Page to Page, were selected for the Student Competitive Screening at the festival. UT Dallas students Margaret Ridley and Jimmy Cramer will serve as production managers for the incubator projects and will also travel to Brazil as part of the team.

These four UT Dallas students will travel to Brazil to participate in a weeklong project incubator workshop alongside students from leading animation schools in Brazil, France (Les Gobelins), Mexico, Spain, and Japan. Their participation also includes public screenings as part of the official festival program. We are aiming to raise $6,800 to cover round-trip airfare for the students so they can fully participate in this internationally competitive opportunity. In addition to the workshops, the festival provides accommodation and meals to accommodation and meals to the selected students throughout their time in Brazil.   Your support will ensure that financial barriers do not prevent our students from representing UT Dallas and the Bass School on a global stage.

The students are committed to sharing their journey on social media, so we can all follow their experience. Thank you for supporting student excellence, creative research, and international academic exchange.
