Lifting the Standard: UT Dallas Powerlifting’s Road to Nationals
The Powerlifting Club at UT Dallas (UTDPL) is more than just a group of students in a gym; we are a dedicated community of athletes, scholars, and competitors. Our principles are rooted in discipline and peer support, and we aim to provide a platform for all students, no matter their experience level, to pursue strength. “Comet Strength” to us is defined by personal growth and collective encouragement to better yourself day in and day out.
As a student-run club sport, we operate through the initiative of our members and have been lucky enough to see explosive growth. There were times when we couldn’t send a single person to Collegiate Nationals, and today we have a roster of 7 athletes who have qualified, and at least twice as many who are platform-ready athletes who compete and represent the grit and academic excellence of the UT Dallas community.
The Project: 2026 Collegiate National Championships
This year, our hard work paid off immensely, and we have a record-breaking number of athletes who have met the rigorous qualifying totals required to compete at the USAPL Collegiate National Championships.
The path to nationals was paved by months of dedication and intensity, both in the gym and out, with late practices and precision in time-management to ensure we also excel in the classroom. Our project is pretty simple; we are raising funds to ensure that every qualified UT Dallas athlete has the opportunity to step onto the national platform, regardless of their financial situation.
Why Your Support Matters
Unlike NCAA sports, collegiate powerlifting is largely self-funded. This means that our athletes can have put hundreds of hours in training to qualify and are still unable to see fruition on the national stage due to the high costs of national competition. Between registration fees, mandatory federation memberships, round-trip travel, and several nights of lodging in a foreign state/city, the cost per athlete can quickly become a heavy load to carry, one that has many athletes questioning if their happiness in a sport is worth the financial burden.
By raising funds for our athletes, we will be able to:
Subsidize Travel & Lodging: Reducing the out-of-pocket burden for our competitive roster.
Cover Registration Fees: Ensuring our athletes are officially entered into the largest collegiate meet in the world.
Provide Resources: We’d love to be able to partner with different brands and even acquire access to training in different facilities at no cost for our members.
Beyond the Goal:
If we exceed our initial fundraising goal, stretch funds will be reinvested directly into the club, giving us a cushion for future collegiate nationals that may not be within drivable distance (New Orleans this year, Oklahoma City last year) and require airfare.
Additionally, the impact of this project would extend far beyond a single weekend in April. When we represent UT Dallas at nationals with the roster we have this year, we have a genuine shot at placing top 10 among all the schools across the nation, proving that students at UT Dallas can be as formidable in the weight room as they are in the classroom. This experience builds leaders, fosters lifelong resilience, and strengthens the bonds between our members and the campus we attend.
